Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory is the hot topic in embodiment and therapy circles. It helps us understand how our nervous system shifts radically into different modes to deal with threat and safety. And the most highly-prized state for humans who live together is the ventral vagal tone - open, curious, social and responsive. Perhaps this is the embodied aspect of what Buddhist call the awakened-heart (bodhicitta)? So, how can we consciously cultivate the ventral vagal tone using our somatic practice? As a long-term somatic practitioner, therapist and Buddhist teacher I have developed a meditative practice to do just that. POLYVAGAL TUNING works in a gentle but comprehensive way to de-frost our internalised fight, flight and freeze responses. And to establish us knowingly in the openness of the ventral vagal tone.
